What is coaching?

I really don’t have the time!

That was my response when my senior colleagues and I were offered opportunities to be coached. I was directing the fundraising and alumni relations office at the time and, although I was curious, I was concerned that this would add pressure to my impossibly busy and stressful job. I was wrong.

After 12 weekly sessions I had achieved three big goals: two related to work and one personal. That was not all – the coaching had positively changed the way I thought about leading and managing my team. It improved my confidence in interacting with other leaders in the university and elsewhere. It also set me on an even keel for when Covid-19 hit. I experienced that coaching can improve lives, relationships and business performance. Most important, it put me on my way to qualify as coach myself and to establish Think New.

Achieve more

Think New uses the brain based Results Coaching system was developed by David Rock from 1996 onwards for high functioning people who want help in structuring and challenging their thinking to achieve more.

Your thinking and ability to make decisions as a leader are improved in a series of structured conversations that take place in a confidential partnership between you and the coach.  The coach ensures that the conversations optimise brain functions to find solutions rather than trying to analyse, or solve problems of the past. The coach allows the discussion to unfold in a way that best suits you.

Coaching is not counselling, mentoring, consulting or training.  It does not try to solve personal problems, or give advice, nor does it train you.

According to the International Coaching Federation, “the coaching process helps clients improve their outlook on work and life, while improving their leadership skills and unlocking their potential.”

Using neuroscience

Our coaching supports the lasting changes our clients want to bring about in their personal and work lives. The neuroscience behind our method enables new pathways in the brain to develop new and better ways of thinking and doing.

The coaching engagement

During coaching you set challenging goals and develop actions to achieve them at your own pace.

The structured process is self-directed and forward focussed on solutions and new habits. Positive feedback deepens your insights, your strengths and your growth.

With your coach you look at

  • where you are currently,
  • where you want to be, and
  • the action you commit to take to get there, in a relatively short period of time.

Throughout the process you set the agenda, with the coach supporting you.

Working with teams, we facilitate high performance and a growth mindset.
